Ortho-K Q & A

What is orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is a vision correction process where you wear specially designed, rigid gas permeable contact lenses overnight. These lenses gently and temporarily reshape your cornea (the front surface of your eye) while you sleep. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll be able to take out the lenses and see clearly as if you were wearing corrective glasses or contacts.

Ortho-k is a revolutionary solution for people who don’t want to rely on glasses but aren’t good candidates for LASIK surgery (because of their age, dry eyes, etc).

What vision problems can ortho-k correct?

Ortho-k lenses are particularly good at treating myopia (nearsightedness), both with and without mild astigmatism, but they can also be used to correct other refractive errors, such as hyperopia (farsightedness) and, in some cases, presbyopia. Ortho-k lenses are also frequently used to slow the progression of childhood myopia.

How long do the effects of ortho-k last?

If you wear your ortho-k lenses regularly, you should be able to see without the aid of glasses or contacts for up to two days, and sometimes longer.

Since the effects of ortho-k lenses are temporary, there is little risk involved in trying it. If you don’t like the process, you can always go back to wearing glasses or regular contacts.

What is the process of using ortho-k lenses?

If you decide that you want to try orthokeratology, Dr. Taranto and the team at Opulent Eyes Optometry first uses a corneal topographer to measure the curvatures of your corneas, a painless procedure that only takes about a minute. You’ll then be given your ortho-k lenses and a series of temporary contact lenses to wear as your prescription gradually changes over the course of the treatment. In most cases, you’ll only need three or less different pairs of lenses before you’ve arrived at your desired vision correction.

You’ll be able to feel to ortho-k lenses in your eyes when you begin to wear them, but eventually, they’ll become comfortable immediately upon insertion. The amount of time that it takes for the ortho-k lenses to fully correct your vision varies with the severity of your prescription. For some conditions, it could take up to two weeks to achieve maximum correction, but some conditions can be resolved within a day or two.
